"Dying to Hunt in Montana:
by Tom Donovan
|
ISBN: 978-0-9769718-3-2 |
Most Montanans have either known or know someone who knew a person that was killed in some sort of hunting accident. While the author hasn't recorded every single fatality he has compiled histories on over 830 hunting related fatalities.
"Dying to Hunt in Montana" is divided into categories to better illustrate the different ways sportsmen and professional hunters and trappers have lost their lives in the activity that they loved. Besides the normal categories of self inflicted, by companion, lost and by animal encounters, there are water and health related as well as miscellaneous deaths, which covers everything from falling out of trees, trees falling on them and falling out of the sky while coyote hunting. There has been everything from falling through the ice, falling off of bicycles and other vehicles as well as a rare case of the bubonic plague.
This book was written to impress the importance of hunter safety, and perhaps it will give some meaning to the many souls who have lost their lives. The primary target audience of "Dying to Hunt in Montana" is the up and coming young hunters who might benefit greatly by the real-life examples and the parents and grandparents of those new hunters. Experienced hunters will, while being aware of the dangers, will be impressed with the sheer volume of instances and the rest of the readers will be amazed at the stories and appreciate another chapter of Montana's people and their lifestyle.
